LUCAS ON HELLER AND MURPHY After exhausting every other sports topic in the universe, poor Mike Lucas is forced to cover us (thanks Mike!); here's what he wrote: Murphy, who has been Cheech to Heller's Chong. Or maybe Lucy to Heller's Ricky. Along with Jon Arias, who produces and handles ESPN updates, the double play combination has been drawing some quality numbers. I gave it an honest effort but just couldn't stomach his nasal voice and idiot comments..."
COMMISH: TRADE FAVRE BY SUNDAY From USA Today: FOX and ESPN are reporting this morning that the Packers have stepped up efforts to trade Favre after being ordered by the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to resolve the quarterback's status, preferably by the time training camp opens Sunday. PACKERS CALLING EVERYONE Except teams in the NFL North, that is. Tom Silverstein gives some insider perspective to the Favre story in today's Journal Sentinel: A well-connected NFL source said that he was told by one club that the Packers were basically told to contact "everybody" to see if there is interest. In other words, Goodell wants the Packers to either find a trading partner or exhaust all possibilities, thereby making it clear to Favre what to do.
(EDIT) There are some in the organization who think the club could receive considerable compensation for Favre and owe it to themselves to find out whether that's true. Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy agree, but both prefer that Favre retire. Click here for the full story.
THEISMANN ON FAVRE The former Redskins great joined us on Heller and Murphy yesterday and surprised everyone with his answer to the question, "If Aaron Rodgers goes down for a significant period of time with an injury, and you're Brett Favre and the Packers call, what would you do?" ANOTHER HALF TRUTH? A media report in Green Bay is refuting an earlier report that Brett Favre used a Packers-issued cell phone to talk to Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress and assistant coach Darrell Bevell. The Green Bay Press-Gazette, citing two sources -- one in the NFL, another close to Favre -- reported that Favre does not have a team-issued cell phone. Click here for more.

So it’s no surprise that the Green Bay Press-Gazette is reporting now that Favre wasn’t using a team-issued cell phone, that he was never issued a cell phone by the team, and that no Packers player has a team-issued cell phone. Frankly, we believe that the Packers are scrambling to avoid a finding that they violated the cap rules. CLICK HERE FOR MORE.
